SEC Approves 3x Leveraged Bitcoin and Ethereum ETPs for US Markets
The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has given the green light to Volatility Shares for listing six triple-leveraged Bitcoin and Ethereum exchange-traded products (ETPs) on the Cboe BZX Exchange. This marks a significant shift in the regulatory landscape, as US crypto funds were previously limited to 2x leverage.
The approval comes less than three weeks after the failure of the CLARITY Act in the Senate, which aimed to provide clearer regulatory guidelines for digital assets. The new 3x leveraged ETPs are designed to multiply the daily performance of the underlying assets, offering investors higher potential returns, but also greater risk.
While this decision is expected to boost crypto adoption and trading liquidity, it also introduces regulatory nuances, hidden costs, and systemic risk concerns. Investors should be aware of the complexities and potential downsides before diving into these highly leveraged products.
