Senate Crypto Regulation Bill Stalls Amid Trump Investment Concerns
A Senate bill aimed at regulating the $2.3 trillion cryptocurrency market has stalled after Democrats blocked it, citing concerns over President Donald Trump's investments in the sector.
The bill, which was backed by industry groups and aimed to create a uniform set of rules for digital assets, failed to pass with 49 votes against 50. Despite concessions made by the White House, including new restrictions on federal elected officials from issuing digital assets, Democrats refused to support the legislation.
Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren argued that passing the bill would allow Trump and his family to continue profiting from cryptocurrency investments while working families struggle with higher prices and an economy in decline. Other Democrats, such as Virginia's Mark Warner, expressed similar concerns over ethics provisions.
The failed vote has been seen as a setback for the crypto industry, which had been pushing aggressively for regulatory clarity. The White House warned that the decision would continue to stifle financial innovation domestically and potentially lead to foreign countries setting global standards for digital assets.
