Senate to Vote on Cryptocurrency Regulation Bill Amid Concerns Over Trump Investments
The US Senate is set to vote on Tuesday on legislation that would create a new regulatory framework for cryptocurrency, but Democrats are pushing back against the bill due to concerns it doesn't do enough to rein in President Donald Trump's personal investments.
The $2.3 trillion cryptocurrency market has been aggressively pushing for uniform rules, and some Democrats are friendly towards the industry, but they want strong ethics safeguards to prevent Trump and his family from profiting while in office.
Trump has amassed significant wealth in crypto since taking office, including over $500 million in revenue from World Liberty Financial sales of crypto products. The company is co-founded with Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff, and Trump reported more than $1.4 billion from crypto businesses last year.
The legislation aims to give the industry legal certainty and protect consumers by creating a broad set of guardrails and regulatory requirements, but opponents say it's a giveaway to the industry as crypto companies have become generous donors to candidates in both parties around the country.
