SoFi has launched a new product called SoFi Earn, or SOFIE, offering tokenized deposits to consumers. These deposits function like cash but are stored on a blockchain, providing a 4.4% interest rate and FDIC protection. The move comes as the debate between tokenized deposits and stablecoins intensifies, with each offering different regulatory and functional benefits.
The launch follows the recent collapse of the Clarity Act in Congress, which aimed to allow interest on stablecoins. SoFi CEO Anthony Noto explained that SoFi Earn targets crypto users who park funds in stablecoins during market fluctuations, offering them a way to earn yield. He also highlighted that crypto companies could use SOFIE to pay service providers like Mastercard, streamlining transactions within the SoFi ecosystem.
Noto emphasized that SoFi Earn is part of the company's broader strategy to integrate blockchain-based and traditional financial services. This allows users to toggle between legacy networks like ACH and blockchain options seamlessly. The product's introduction marks a significant step in bridging the gap between traditional banking and the crypto world.
