Solana Alpenglow Upgrade Hits Public Testnet: Faster Transactions Ahead
Solana's Alpenglow consensus upgrade has reached a crucial milestone as it transitions to the public testnet, marking a significant step towards faster transaction finality. The upgrade aims to reduce the current 12.8-second wait time to around 150 milliseconds, a substantial improvement that will benefit exchanges and bridges.
The change from TowerBFT to Votor protocol removes the lengthy on-chain voting chain that contributes to the delay, allowing validators to agree on a block within a few rounds. This upgrade has been tested on a separate network for over four months, and now it's being put through its paces on the public testnet.
The Agave validator client is leading the charge with version 4.3.0, which has been deemed stable enough to run on mainnet beta, devnet, and testnet. The team behind Anza has instructed all mainnet validators to update to this new version, paving the way for a wider roll-out.
