Solana Clock Runs Nearly 17% Faster with 250ms Slot Time Reduction
Solana has made a significant change to its network, reducing its target slot time from 300 milliseconds to 250 milliseconds. This move makes the network's clock run nearly 17% faster and is part of the SIMD-0525 upgrade. With this change, Solana targets four slots per second, up from roughly 3.3 previously.
The reduction in slot time does not necessarily mean a 17% increase in transaction processing power. Instead, it allows for smaller blocks to be created more frequently, which can improve the responsiveness of fast-moving on-chain markets and applications that rely on blockchain data.
A slot represents the short period assigned to a validator to produce a block. By reducing each slot from 300ms to 250ms, Solana's leader schedule remains at four consecutive slots, but the control window is now one second instead of 1.2 seconds. This change can benefit trading systems, oracle consumers, and automated market makers that require timely access to blockchain data.
The upgrade also continues a broader performance program aimed at reducing latency on the Solana network. The proposal keeps epochs at 432,000 slots, meaning an epoch lasts about 30 hours instead of roughly 36 hours with the previous setting.
