Stablecoin Hype Falters as BIS Warns of Reliability Issues
The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has expressed skepticism towards stablecoins, arguing they are not reliable as everyday payment instruments at scale. BIS General Manager Pablo Hernández de Cos made these comments in an interview with Reuters, contrasting stablecoins with tokenized bank deposits.
Hernández de Cos acknowledged that stablecoins could potentially reduce government borrowing costs but warned of possible knock-on effects for bank funding and consumer borrowing rates. He also highlighted the lack of interoperability between stablecoin platforms as a major issue.
The BIS has released research highlighting the uneven regulatory frameworks across different jurisdictions, with some countries taking more restrictive approaches towards non-bank issuers. Hernández de Cos emphasized that regulators need to consider how innovation affects financial stability and monetary policy control.
