Tether's USDT Returns to Bitcoin via Utexo Project
Tether's USDT stablecoin is returning to its roots on Bitcoin this month, thanks to a project called Utexo that's backed by the stablecoin issuer. The Utexo project will allow for private USDT transfers, direct swaps between native Bitcoin and USDT, and bitcoin-backed loans, all while keeping most transaction data off Bitcoin's public ledger.
The plan is to move USDT back onto Bitcoin, where it first launched in 2014. Currently, USDT is primarily traded on Ethereum and Tron, but Bitcoin offers a unique combination of security, provenance, and stability that makes it an attractive destination for a stablecoin issuer.
The Utexo project plans to move USDT onto Bitcoin's Lightning Network after its initial launch, which would put the largest stablecoin inside Bitcoin's payment network. This would make it easier for users to send and receive USDT, especially in markets where senders hold BTC and recipients want dollars.
However, the launch of Utexo on Bitcoin has its challenges, including the need for competitive fees, wallet support, and off-chain machinery that can handle real volume without breaking.
