Tokenized Equities Surge Past $9B in On-Chain Trading Volume
The tokenized equity market has seen explosive growth in recent months, with on-chain trading volume reaching $9 billion. This represents an 800% increase since January and makes tokenized equities one of the fastest-growing categories within the RWA space.
In terms of total value, tokenized stocks have grown from $683.6 million to $2.399 billion year-to-date, a roughly 250% increase. This growth is primarily driven by adoption among new platforms and users outside the US who cannot easily open a domestic brokerage account.
The sudden spike in volume in June and July aligns with the launch of Robinhood Chain and Binance's bStocks, which have brought stock tokens to millions of existing users. The growth is attributed to access arbitrage, where users are buying tokenized shares for their advantages over traditional equities, such as 24/7 trading, fractional size, and stablecoin settlement.
Nasdaq plans to extend trading hours, potentially compressing the moat of crypto-native platforms but not necessarily closing it. The next few months will answer whether $9 billion was a one-time event or the start of a new trend in on-chain trading volume.
