U.K. Financial Sector Eyes Tokenization for Faster Settlements and Efficiency
The U.K. financial sector is increasingly focusing on tokenization as a transformative technology. A study by Lloyds, conducted between April 13 and May 19, 2026, revealed that nearly three-quarters of the country’s largest financial institutions believe tokenization will significantly alter financial services. The survey, which included 100 executives from major banks, insurers, and investment firms, found that 71% of respondents anticipate major industry impacts from the technology. Additionally, 77% of firms view investment in new technologies as a top growth priority.
The study highlighted several key benefits of tokenization, with 60% of respondents citing faster payments and settlement as the primary advantage. Efficient collateral and liquidity management was another major benefit, noted by 41% of participants. Lloyds also pointed out that tokenization could automate transactions under predefined conditions, freeing up capital and liquidity currently tied up during settlement. Experts project that tokenization could generate £33 billion in annual economic benefits for the U.K. financial market by 2035.
Interest in tokenization is surging as financial firms ramp up investments in digital infrastructure. The study showed that 64% of firms plan to increase capital spending over the next 12 months, nearly double the 41% recorded in 2025. Lloyds expects the next phase of development to involve scaling infrastructure, which will require interoperability between systems and common standards to connect digital assets with traditional markets.
Lloyds Banking Group, the U.K.’s largest retail financial services group, is actively exploring tokenization. In 2026, the bank collaborated with Archax and Canton Network to execute the U.K.’s first public blockchain transaction using tokenized bank deposits to purchase tokenized U.K. government bonds. This project demonstrated how tokenization can streamline and accelerate settlement processes. Lloyds has also invested over £4 billion in modernizing its technology infrastructure and is part of an international consortium working on stablecoin issuance and cross-border settlement using USDC in partnership with Visa.
