The UAE has tightened its grip on cryptocurrency-related financial crime by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Virtual Asset Regulatory Authority (VARA).

The MoU, signed on October 5, provides a framework for the two authorities to exchange financial intelligence and expertise to identify and address financial-crime risks in the virtual assets sector.

Ali Faisal Ba'Alawi, Chief of the UAE Financial Intelligence Unit, said that cooperation between authorities is crucial in addressing emerging risks, particularly with the rapid technological advances and cross-border nature of financial crime.

The agreement will strengthen existing cooperation between VARA and the UAE FIU, including channels for sharing expertise and identifying emerging risks.

VARA's CEO, Matthew White, added that continued cooperation between regulators, law-enforcement bodies, and the industry is essential to achieving their objectives.
