UK Court Orders Former NCA Officer to Repay $2.4 Million for Stolen Bitcoin
A UK court has ordered former National Crime Agency officer Paul Chowles to repay £1,810,678.93 for stealing 50 BTC from a wallet seized during an investigation into Silk Road 2.0.
The coins were worth around $77,000 when he took them in 2017, but their value had increased significantly by the time they were recovered.
Chowles was part of the NCA team investigating Silk Road 2.0, and his role involved analyzing and extracting cryptocurrency from devices seized in the case.
He moved 50 BTC out of a confiscated wallet and tried to obscure where it went, breaking the sum into smaller amounts and routing them through the Bitcoin Fog mixing service before cashing out through Cryptopay and Wirex debit cards across 279 transactions totaling £144,580.
