US Senate Rejects Comprehensive Crypto Regulation Bill
The US Senate has voted down the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, a bill aimed at regulating cryptocurrency and providing clarity on digital asset regulations. The bill, backed by former President Donald Trump, needed 60 votes to proceed for debate but received only 49 in favor.
Senator Elizabeth Warren from Massachusetts expressed concerns about the legislation, stating it would 'turbocharge' Trump's ability to rake in billions of dollars from crypto while Americans suffer from an affordability crisis. Critics also argued that rewards on stablecoin holdings could detract from traditional bank deposits, limiting financial resources for farmers and small businesses.
Despite significant opposition from community banks, the bill was altered by Senator Thom Tillis, allowing for possible reconsideration in the future. However, with Congress preparing for a break ahead of the November midterm elections, it is unclear when discussions might resume.
