Vitalik Buterin Proposes Calculus Over Trigonometry in High School Math Curricula

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has weighed in on an educational debate about high school math curricula. He proposed reducing the emphasis on trigonometry and replacing it with a focus on calculus and systems analysis.

The discussion started after Flexport CEO Ryan Petersen suggested replacing geometry and trigonometry with statistics and applied economics. However, Buterin disagreed, arguing that students should have introductory intuitions about linearity vs non-linearity, high-dimensionality, and reasoning about systems.

He believes that teaching basic calculus alongside multivariable calculus would provide a more versatile foundation for artificial intelligence, cryptography, and biomedical sciences. Buterin also questioned the practical day-to-day utility of certain formal identities, pointing out that he has rarely needed to apply them in his technical and professional career.

This proposal coincides with Buterin's ongoing work on Ethereum's cryptographic infrastructure, specifically the EIP-8288 improvement proposal. This initiative introduces recursive STARKs at the mempool level to aggregate cryptographic signatures and computational validity proofs, which requires a rigorous grasp of multidimensional algebra and optimization algorithms.
