The Bank of Canada has unveiled a new design for the $20 bill featuring King Charles III. This is the first time in over 70 years that a monarch other than Queen Elizabeth II appears on the note. The Queen, who passed away on September 8, 2022, after a record-breaking 70-year reign, was featured on the $20 bill for most of this period.

The new design, which will enter general circulation in February, features King Charles in a vertically oriented portrait, unlike the traditional horizontal orientation. This is the second Canadian bank note to feature a vertical design, following the $10 bill featuring Viola Desmond.

Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem praised the new design, stating that it 'is striking, symbolic and secure.' He noted that the note's advanced security features are combined with images reflecting Canada's beauty and history.
