Asia Braces for Inflation Surge Amid Conflict and Climate Disruptions
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has warned that Asia will face sustained inflation pressure into 2027 due to ongoing wars in Europe and the Middle East, as well as a severe El Niño. The conflicts have disrupted global supply chains, particularly for crude and refined products, while the abnormal weather patterns caused by El Niño are threatening harvests across several countries.
The ADB cited the re-escalation of fighting in Iran and the spread of conflict to Yemen as significant contributors to the inflationary pressures. The war between Russia and Ukraine has also disrupted grain shipments. Meanwhile, the severe El Niño is already affecting hydropower generation and traffic in waterways like the Panama Canal.
The ADB's latest outlook emphasizes that central banks will need to remain vigilant and prepared to respond to these inflationary pressures. The organization did not provide specific predictions or targets for inflation rates but emphasized the importance of monitoring the situation closely.
