Asteron-Acenda Merger Set to Shake Up NZ Life Insurance Market
The New Zealand insurance landscape is set for a significant shift as Asteron Life Limited prepares to merge with Resolution Life Australasia Limited's NZ branch business. The resulting entity, Acenda Life, will become the second-largest life insurer in the country by in-force premiums and largest by assets under management.
According to Fitch Ratings, the merger will support a one-notch upgrade of Asteron's IFS Rating from 'A+' to 'AA-' and its Long-Term Issuer Default Rating from 'A' to 'A+.'
The consolidation is expected to complete by February 1, 2027, pending approval from the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ). Fitch noted that the rating action may take more than six months to resolve.
