Bank of England Sounds Alarm on AI-Driven Financial Risks
The Bank of England's Governor, Andrew Bailey, has sounded the alarm about the risks associated with Artificial Intelligence (AI) in financial markets. Bailey warned that AI could trigger shocks in financial markets and that not everyone investing in AI would come out a winner.
He noted that asset prices of some companies developing AI have gone up significantly due to high expectations, but cautioned that this level of investment carries risks. 'You could see some correction of asset prices at some point,' Bailey said. 'Everybody is currently priced to be a winner, but you look back at the past, not everybody is a winner.'
Bailey pointed out that AI has revealed weaknesses in operating software and created a more powerful way to uncover hidden problems. He also raised concerns about deep fakes, saying AI-generated images and videos could be used to deceive the public.
The governor emphasized that while AI has clear benefits, including its ability to speed up work supporting interest rate decisions, it is not making the decisions but a useful tool in the hands of policymakers. Bailey said the Bank of England was keeping a close eye on large investments in AI companies and warned that the system needs to be resilient.
