Bullock Flags Rate Hike as Banks Predict Interest Rate Increase
RBA Governor Michele Bullock signaled that interest rates are likely to rise next week as Australia's jobs market continues to drive inflation. The four major banks - Commonwealth Bank, ANZ, Westpac, and NAB - have all predicted a rate hike, with some tipping it to happen after both the upcoming meeting and the November meeting.
Bullock said that between 4.5% and 5% interest rates will be enough to cool down the labor market and ease pressure on inflation. She also emphasized the importance of not allowing global energy price shocks to translate into domestic price increases, which could perpetuate ongoing inflation.
In a separate comment, Bullock expressed concerns about the potential bubble in artificial intelligence (AI) development, stating that there is no evidence it has made the economy more efficient. However, she clarified that she has no particular view on whether AI is a bubble or not, but believes it's a risk worth watching.
