Burnham's Path Forward: UK Markets Anticipate Shift in Policy Direction
The British market's reaction to Keir Starmer's resignation has been relatively muted. Sterling and UK Gilts initially came under pressure before stabilizing, according to analysts who attribute the calm partly to the fact that the latest political turmoil had largely been priced in by the market.
The pound dipped slightly against the US dollar, hovering around 1.324 dollars to the pound during early Asian trading this morning. Since Starmer's political crisis began brewing in early May, the pound has fallen nearly 3% cumulative against the dollar.
The benchmark 10-year UK Gilt yield proved relatively stable, briefly edging up 1 basis point intraday to hit 4.85% before pulling back to hover around 4.81%. The FTSE 100 index posted modest overnight gains, closing up 0.72%.
