European Central Bank (ECB) Chief Economist Philip Lane stated that the current inflationary pressures in the eurozone constitute a 'medium-sized shock.' He made this comment during a panel discussion in Donegal, Ireland. Lane emphasized that while the ECB will continue to implement its policy response, it is not necessary to take rapid and aggressive measures like those deployed in 2022.

Lane expressed confidence that inflation can be brought down from the current 3% to 2% over the next year or so. He noted that the ECB's goal is to ensure inflation returns to its medium-term target, but stressed that there are no immediate 'red lights' flashing, demanding rapid action.

The ECB held its policy rate steady at a recent Governing Council meeting, but its accompanying statement hinted that additional monetary tightening may be necessary. Market participants now view a rate hike at the next meeting in September as virtually certain.
