Euro Zone Services Growth Hits Five-Year High Amid ECB Tightening Pressures
The Euro zone's services sector saw its fastest growth rate since November of last year, driving overall economic expansion to a five-year high in September. This surge has intensified calls for the European Central Bank to adopt a more aggressive stance on monetary policy tightening.
A composite reading from purchasing managers' index surveys suggested the bloc's economy is growing at an annualized rate of 0.4%, with expectations of continued growth into the fourth quarter. The momentum extended beyond manufacturing, with Germany and France reporting their first services sector expansions of the year since March.
Italy's services sector marked its fourth consecutive month of expansion, outperforming Spain, which recorded its strongest growth in four months. Meanwhile, input-price inflation climbed to 4%, pushing Euro zone inflation closer to the European Central Bank's 2% target. The combination of faster economic growth and rising price pressures has amplified demands for stricter monetary policy measures.
