Fuel Prices Push UK Inflation Up to 3.1%
The UK's inflation rate rose to 3.1% in August, up from 2.9% in July, driven by higher fuel prices and a jump in the cost of food staples such as pasta, margarine, and tea.
The Office for National Statistics reported that petrol prices increased by 20.2% year on year, while diesel prices rose by 27.8%, reflecting renewed hostilities in the Middle East that have disrupted global oil supplies.
However, inflation eased elsewhere, with a drop in the cost of portable audio and visual devices such as smartphones, down 14.5% year on year, and other electrical goods like irons, personal computers, fridges, and freezers also seeing price reductions.
