Gas Prices Soothe Inflation Pain
US inflation cooled in July as falling gas prices helped ease pressure on consumers. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by 3.4% over the past year, a slight decrease from June's annual rate of 3.5%. On a month-over-month basis, prices fell 0.1% seasonally adjusted.
The decline in energy prices, led by a 2.9% drop in gasoline prices, contributed significantly to the overall decrease. However, energy remains more expensive than it was a year ago, with the index up 14.7%. Housing costs continue to be a key driver of inflation, accounting for two-thirds of the monthly increase.
Despite the easing inflation rate, the US price growth still exceeds the Federal Reserve's 2% target. Policymakers are likely to raise interest rates this fall if inflation remains high.
