Japan Panel Stresses BOJ Independence Amid Interest Rate Hikes
Japan's key economic advisory panel has emphasized the importance of the Bank of Japan's independence in monetary policy operations, while also stressing the need for close coordination between the government and the central bank. This shift in approach comes after private-sector members of the Council on Economic and Fiscal Policy (CEFP) urged the BOJ to pay attention to funding conditions at smaller firms in May.
The recommendations submitted by the CEFP's private-sector members reflect a more nuanced understanding of the relationship between monetary policy and fiscal policy. They acknowledge that the recent rise in long-term interest rates cannot be explained by fiscal policy alone, but rather is driven by a range of factors including monetary policy, inflation expectations, and overseas markets.
Economy Minister Minoru Kiuchi stated that the government and BOJ maintain close communication and regularly exchange views at various levels. He emphasized that there is no major discrepancy between the two sides in their understanding of economic and price conditions.
