New Zealand Business Confidence Rises Despite Middle East Uncertainty
New Zealand business confidence has surged despite ongoing uncertainty from the Middle East conflict, according to the latest Quarterly Survey of Business Opinion (QSBO) by the NZ Institute of Economic Research (NZIER). A net 40% of firms now expect economic improvement, up from just 14% in June, marking the highest optimism in over a year. However, current trading conditions remain soft, with only 1% of businesses reporting better conditions.
Principal economist Christina Leung noted that confidence is broad-based across sectors, with retail and building industries showing particular optimism. Firms are also more inclined to invest and hire, though finding skilled labor is becoming a challenge. Inflation pressures have eased, with fewer businesses reporting higher costs and lower expectations for price increases.
The survey suggests flat economic growth for the quarter, with firms anticipating further interest rate hikes from the Reserve Bank. However, NZIER does not believe another rate rise is necessary this year. Geopolitical uncertainties and global oil supply remain risks to New Zealand's economic recovery.
