NZX 50 Dips to 18-Sept Low on Inflation Concerns
New Zealand's stock market took a hit on Tuesday morning, mirroring the decline seen on Wall Street overnight. The NZX 50 index dropped by 76 points, or 0.6%, to reach 13,755, marking its lowest level since September 18.
The downturn was largely due to concerns over inflation and expectations of a Federal Reserve interest rate hike, triggered by rising oil prices and Treasury yields. This has left investors on edge, awaiting key economic indicators such as New Zealand's business confidence for September, China's PMI data, and the US PCE Index and jobs data.
Among the early losers were Freightways Group (-1.9%), Channel Infrastructure (-1.7%), South Port NZ (-1.2%), Briscoe Group (-0.9%), Mercury NZ (-0.8%), Mainfreight (-0.5%), and ANZ Group (-0.5%).
However, not all news was bad, as Hallenstein Glasson bucked the trend by jumping 4.6% after posting a 49.9% surge in net profit for the year ended August 1.
