AI Boom Fuels Bay Area Housing Crisis as Wealth Surge Exceeds Residential Property Value
The artificial intelligence boom in the Bay Area is creating enormous new wealth, but it's also exacerbating the region's affordability crisis. According to Redfin, current and former employees of private AI companies like OpenAI and Anthropic hold nearly $200 billion in after-tax equity, equivalent to roughly 29% of the value of all residential real estate in the San Francisco metro area.
Jennifer Lum, a senior account executive at Slack Salesforce, says she's seeing the effects firsthand. 'We have a unique housing situation that allows us to live here,' she said, 'but if it were to fall through, I could see us having to move.'
Some experts are warning about the potential consequences of this wealth surge, particularly for younger workers who can't afford the rising housing costs.
