AI Optimism Lifts Tech Stocks Despite Oil Price Rise
The US stock market saw mixed results on Monday as investors weighed the growing optimism around artificial intelligence against higher oil prices and geopolitical tensions.
Despite concerns about inflation, technology stocks continued to perform well due to expectations of fewer Federal Reserve rate hikes. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 167 points or 0.3%, while the S&P 500 declined by 0.12%. In contrast, the Nasdaq Composite edged up slightly by 0.01%.
The recent strength in technology stocks can be attributed to strong revenue growth at AI companies such as Anthropic. The company is reportedly expecting revenue of around $190 billion to $200 billion in 2028 and has already exceeded $11.5 billion in the second quarter, according to Reuters. This optimism has led to increased demand for AI-related infrastructure, with Micron Technology rising more than 4%.
Nvidia's upcoming earnings report next week is expected to provide further insight into the demand for AI infrastructure. The company's shares have also been boosted by reports that it had scaled back plans to support an OpenAI data center project in Ohio. Meanwhile, Amazon fell while Apple gained slightly.
