Alibaba Unveils 3x Faster AI Chip Amid China's Growing Tech Ambitions
Alibaba has unveiled an AI chip called Zhenwu V900 that it claims is three times faster than its predecessor. The company plans to start mass production in early 2027, and its own models are expected to scale up to 5 trillion to 10 trillion parameters by the same year.
The move highlights China's growing capabilities in AI technology, despite restrictions on access to US chips. Alibaba is building a full stack of AI capabilities from scratch, which gives it control over the entire process and allows it to capture cloud revenue without relying on external vendors.
Nvidia, on the other hand, faces a challenge as its products are subject to export restrictions in China. While the company still dominates the global market, Alibaba's progress may initially replace sales that Nvidia is unable to make under current restrictions. In the long term, local customers may become accustomed to using domestic hardware, making it harder for Nvidia to regain its position if policy changes later.
