Amazon Commits $1 Billion to Data Center Communities
Amazon Web Services (AWS) CEO Matt Garman has announced that the company will invest $1 billion in local communities over the next five years to build data centers. This move comes as a response to growing concerns about the potential impacts of data centers on towns and cities.
The investment, part of Amazon's 'Built Together' initiative, aims to address concerns around education, job training, energy affordability, water and energy preservation, and local priorities in communities that allow for data center construction. Garman emphasized that the company will work closely with local leaders to determine what is most useful for each community.
The move follows a trend of increasing backlash against data centers, with some states imposing moratoria on new facilities due to concerns about their impacts on local environments and economies.
