Amazon Expands Chicago Footprint with New Same-Day Delivery Hub Near Goose Island
Amazon has acquired a large, multi-story warehouse near Goose Island in Chicago, marking another step in its expansion within the city. The facility at 1237 W. Division St. will serve as a same-day delivery hub, stocking everyday essentials and grocery staples. Built by Logistics Property Company in 2024, the building sat vacant until Amazon purchased it for nearly $200 million, as reported by Crain’s. The site was constructed on spec, without a tenant secured beforehand.
The new hub is expected to open in late 2027 or early 2028 after Amazon completes retrofitting, including adding refrigeration for grocery services. Kyle DeGiulio, who leads economic development in the Midwest for Amazon, highlighted the strategic location’s proximity to the Kennedy Expressway and Downtown Chicago, which will enhance delivery efficiency. “This location being so close to the Central Business District... really gives us unbelievable access,” DeGiulio said.
Amazon plans to minimize traffic impact by timing deliveries outside rush hour and utilizing drivers with personal vehicles instead of traditional Amazon vans. The warehouse includes nearly 1,600 car parking stalls, helping to avoid street congestion. This expansion comes amid ongoing traffic issues in the area due to bridge closures, including the Halsted Street and Chicago Avenue intersection, which is closed until at least the end of the year.
The acquisition follows Amazon’s existing same-day delivery hub in West Humboldt Park, reflecting the company’s growing footprint in Chicago. The new facility aims to provide faster delivery options for customers, aligning with Amazon’s broader strategy of optimizing logistics for urban markets.
