Amazon Joins Hyperscalers in Investing Billions in Existing Nuclear Power Plants
Amazon has joined other hyperscalers like Google and Microsoft in investing in existing nuclear power plants, signing a 20-year deal to buy electricity from Constellation's Calvert Cliffs Clean Energy Center in Maryland for over $3 billion. This investment will allow the plant to generate an additional 190 megawatts of capacity on top of its current 1.8 gigawatts.
This move follows similar investments by Google and Microsoft in nuclear power plants, with Amazon joining the ranks as a major player in the industry. The deal is part of a larger trend of hyperscalers investing in clean energy to reduce their carbon footprint and ensure a stable supply of electricity.
Fervo Energy has also made headlines with its rapid development of geothermal power, completing the world's first enhanced geothermal generating station just 23 months after construction began. The company's Cape Station project is expected to generate 500 megawatts of electricity once fully operational.
