Amazon's Drone Hub Plans Met with Pause Demand from Massachusetts Lawmakers

Amazon's Prime Air drone delivery hub in Westborough, Massachusetts, has faced a call to pause from three state lawmakers. In a letter addressed to Amazon's economic development policy manager Tareq Wafaie, Senators Michael Moore and Hannah Kane, along with Representative Kate Donaghue, expressed concerns over the operation's scope.

The lawmakers criticized Amazon for leaving key details such as operating hours, flight paths, service range, and daily flight counts undetermined. They cited videos of Prime Air drones crashing or causing noise complaints in other locations, including Texas and Nebraska.

The letter also pointed out that Amazon had not conducted a peer-reviewed wildlife study to assess the impact on local bird populations. Wafaie had previously stated that the company relied on the FAA's review for environmental clearance.

Massachusetts has joined 14 other states in suing the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) over the environmental clearance for drone delivery hubs, including Amazon's proposed Westborough hub. The lawmakers' letter argued that a federal permit does not reflect community trust and support.
