American Airlines Axes Traditional First Class on 777-300ER

As part of its major cabin overhaul, American Airlines is phasing out traditional First Class on its Boeing 777-300ER fleet. The transformation, dubbed Project Olympus, began on September 2, 2026, with the first retrofitted aircraft entering commercial service on a New York to Buenos Aires route.

Under the new configuration, American has removed the eight-seat Flagship First cabin and replaced it with a massive 70-seat Flagship Suite business class cabin. This change allows for a substantial increase in premium seating capacity, from 330 to 370 passengers, including 44 Premium Economy seats and 30 Main Cabin Extra seats.

The airline will stop selling international First Class on the 777-300ER for travel beginning November 19, 2026. Travelers who previously booked First Class after this date are being re-accommodated into the new suites, which offer comparable levels of privacy through sliding doors.
