Amgen Harnesses Artificial Intelligence for Streamlined New Drug Development

Global biotechnology company Amgen is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) throughout its new drug development process, from designing candidate molecules to clinical trials. According to Paul Burton, Amgen's senior vice president and chief medical officer, AI enables better molecule design and faster connections between patients and relevant clinical trials. The company has reduced the time required for regulatory document preparation from six months to just six weeks since implementing AI.

Amgen is expanding its use of AI in clinical trials through its machine learning system 'ATOMIC.' This tool helps identify suitable patient populations and streamline clinical trial registration. Additionally, AI-driven 'Go/No-Go' decisions are made to determine whether new drug development should continue at each clinical stage.

The company's next step is to develop 'digital twins,' which use AI to model a patient's treatment journey and predict the outcome of treatments. This innovation has the potential to improve clinical decision-making not only in new drug development but also in medicine as a whole, according to Burton.
