Apple Faces India Probe Over iOS 18-Linked iPhone Malfunctions
India's Central Consumer Protection Authority has escalated an investigation into complaints that iOS 18 caused problems on iPhones, which could put Apple's software warranty terms under scrutiny. The regulator is examining allegations that the update led to screen and microphone malfunctions, as well as other issues, and whether Apple's software warranty left affected consumers paying for repairs.
The regulator received complaints about consumers having to pay 'exorbitant amounts' for repairs after iOS 18 caused problems with their iPhones. Reuters reported an estimated service cost of 27,900 rupees, or $291, for damage to an iPhone 15 screen, which is more than a third of its retail price.
Apple disputes the accusations, saying that it found no systemic issues with iOS 18 and maintains that providing no warranty on software is consistent with global industry standards. The company says the case is based on just 75 complaints and that iOS 18 underwent stringent testing, with only about 11% of iPhones still running iOS 18 by June 2026.
