Bakari to Lead Disney's Gorilla Troop Following Integration

Bakari, a 21-year-old silverback gorilla at Disney's Animal Kingdom, is weeks away from being fully integrated into his new troop. The barriers between Bakari and three female gorillas will be removed, allowing them to interact freely for the first time in public view.

According to Rachel Daneault, primate zoological manager at Disney, the current interaction between the gorillas is promising. 'They are sitting at those panels all the time. They'll get their food. They'll gather it together. They'll eat next to each other. They'll make big nests next to them. They'll sleep next to each other,' Daneault said.

Bakari was transferred from the Saint Louis Zoo in late June as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Western Lowland Gorilla Species Survival Plan. The Disney animal care team is hopeful that Bakari will take on a leading role within his new troop, becoming the head of a family.

Before the barrier comes down, Bakari needed one last checkup. Dr. Geoff, Disney World veterinarian and animal health director, reported that Bakari 'was such a good boy because he took his hand injection for anesthesia like a champion.' The Walt Disney Company has also donated $100,000 to support three gorilla organizations in honor of World Gorilla Day and the arrival of Bakari.
