Bangladesh Denies External Pressure Behind Boeing Aircraft Purchase
The government of Bangladesh has clarified its decision to purchase Boeing aircraft for Biman Bangladesh Airlines, dismissing claims of external pressure or hidden agendas. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir stated that the purchase was made through an open and formal signing ceremony in line with the national flag carrier's requirements.
Kobir emphasized that the government is evaluating the fleet needs of Biman based on passenger demand and future international operations, and that there was no external influence involved. He pointed out that historically, Bangladesh has operated Boeing wide-body aircraft, but now requires a mixed fleet to expand its routes and become an aviation hub.
The purchase agreement for 11 additional Boeing aircraft was signed in September, with the price of the previously agreed-upon 14 aircraft totaling approximately USD 3.7 billion or Tk 450 billion. The state minister assured that Bangladesh would continue to buy more Boeing aircraft if necessary to expand its fleet and improve passenger services.
Kobir also mentioned that a technical assessment is underway to resume Biman's Dhaka-New York flight, which was suspended due to technical issues. He stated that the government is reviewing necessary matters to revive the service.
