Berkshire, JPMorgan Bet Big on Housing Rebound
Berkshire Hathaway and JPMorgan Chase have made significant investments in the housing industry, indicating their confidence in a rebounding market. Despite high mortgage rates, which have been rising since 2022, both companies are betting on an improvement.
The Federal Reserve is expected to hike interest rates again due to stubbornly high inflation, but some signs suggest a turnaround. Housing data shows that the real value of homes fell in June as inflation outpaced home price increases, and home sales increased 4.5% year over year.
Berkshire Hathaway has been investing in housing since 2023, acquiring D.R. Horton, NVR, and Lennar, and now owning a majority stake in Taylor Morrison. The company's cash pile has decreased to $365 billion after the acquisition of Taylor Morrison for $6.8 billion.
JPMorgan Chase is committing $750 billion through 2035 to help build or preserve one million affordable housing units and aid 500,000 customers in purchasing homes. This investment aims to alleviate margin pressure associated with higher construction costs while expanding Berkshire's dominance in the arena.
