Boeing 747's Passenger Era Comes to an End as Airlines Favor Twin-Engine Widebodies

The Boeing 747's reign as a passenger aircraft is coming to an end. The first 747 entered commercial service in January 1970, and Pan American World Airways (Pan Am) was its launch customer.

The 747 was designed for long-distance air travel and provided greater passenger capacity than existing aircraft. However, as technology improved, airlines began to favor twin-engine widebodies like the Boeing 777 and 787.

The COVID-19 pandemic further accelerated the retirement of many remaining passenger 747s, with airlines reducing capacity and reassessing the economics of older four-engine aircraft.
