Boeing Detects Software Glitch in 737 MAX Fleet's Automated Navigation

Boeing has identified a previously undisclosed software glitch in its 737 MAX fleet that can cause a loss of automated navigation guidance during landing. The issue is related to a flight deck software update to the flight computers on certain Boeing 737 MAX aircraft.

The technical anomaly occurs when flight crews alter their planned routing after executing a missed approach (go-around), leading to a failure of the automated flight guidance system. This can leave pilots without assistance to complete the landing, forcing them to manage the scenario manually or with flight director guidance.

Boeing has notified all 737 operators about this unintended software behavior and is working on a permanent fix through a software update. The FAA is aware of the issue and will convene a corrective action review board to take immediate action if any safety issue is identified.
