Boeing Unveils Affordable Radar Sensor with Ultra Low-Cost Seeker
Boeing has successfully tested its Ultra Low-Cost Seeker (ULCS) in various environments, aiming to provide an affordable radar sensor for offensive and defensive weapons. The company plans to integrate the technology across multiple programs, including integrated air and missile defense, direct attack, and cruise missile portfolios.
The ULCS is built around commercial off-the-shelf components adapted for military applications, with a modular open-systems architecture designed for high-volume production. Boeing tested the seeker in an anechoic chamber, during captive-carry flights, and aboard a scaled-down rocket, demonstrating its ability to detect and track targets.
The company also conducted tests using a Beechcraft 1900 aircraft, which carried the seeker over land and maritime environments, confirming baseline target detection and tracking. Additionally, ULCS tracked an unmanned aerial vehicle from the ground at Spaceport America in New Mexico, and later tracked a reflector drone while mounted on a surrogate rocket.
Boeing aims to provide an affordable seeker for precision weapons operating in all weather conditions and against moving targets. The company is analyzing data from the recent tests and will conduct multiple flight tests in 2027 using configurations that more closely represent intended end-use applications.
