Boeing's Delayed 777X Takes Flight Amid Optimism for 2027 Entry

Boeing's seventh 777-9 aircraft took to the skies for its first flight on July 24, marking a significant milestone in the long-delayed type's testing campaign. The plane departed from Paine Field in Everett, Washington, and flew for about three hours over Washington, Idaho, and Oregon before landing back at Paine Field that evening.

According to Boeing, an engineering pilot on board the flight described the airplane as performing 'beautifully'. The company plans to use this aircraft to conduct extended operations (ETOPS) and function and reliability testing over the next several months.

The 777X program has faced numerous delays since development began in the early 2010s, including cracks in the engine thrust links and an 'uncommanded pitch event' in 2020. However, Boeing expects the type to be certified and enter commercial service in 2027, with over 650 orders so far.

Boeing's recent test flights have shown a significant ramp-up in activity, with five 777-9s airborne within 24 hours on August 3. Crews conducted systems, propulsion, and interior tests during about 18 hours of flight testing and additional ground tests.
