A new study from IBM's Institute for Business Value found that as artificial intelligence (AI) becomes more integrated into enterprise operations, Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) are taking on a larger role in shaping AI strategy and decision-making.

The study surveyed 1,500 CFOs across 33 geographies and 26 industries and found that 62% of respondents say their role has expanded into enterprise technology or AI strategy leadership. Additionally, 56% report greater portfolio-management and capital reallocation authority, while 54% have taken on more responsibility for business model or growth strategy design.

CFOs are no longer just guardians of stability but now need to shape decisions from the start by connecting strategy to execution, insight to action, and technology to value creation. IBM's Chief Financial Officer, James Kavanaugh, wrote in the study's foreword: 'Those responsibilities remain essential.'
