ChatGPT Brings AI-Powered Writing to Microsoft Word

ChatGPT has integrated with Microsoft Word, allowing users to simplify and revise content within the word processor. The integration was officially announced on September 17, but was available for installation from the Microsoft Marketplace beforehand.

The plugin allows users to select a paragraph, type a command, and receive revised content without having to manually adjust font or numbering. It can also assist with tasks such as summarizing long reports, organizing scattered notes, and standardizing terminology.

Free users have access to the integration, but are limited to the GPT-5.6 Luna model, which is the fastest and lowest-cost tier. Business and Enterprise users can preview the more powerful GPT-5.6 Sol model for free until October 1, 2026, when it will be enabled by default in workspaces.

The integration marks a significant milestone in the development of AI-powered office software, with ChatGPT joining Excel and PowerPoint in Microsoft's suite of AI tools. OpenAI has stated that its goal is to get users started with the technology before targeting enterprise clients with paid plans.
