Coca-Cola's Quiet Economic Footprint in Nigeria: Over 160,000 Jobs Supported
Coca-Cola's impact in Nigeria is significant, with new data showing that it supported over 160,000 jobs and added $1 billion to the country's economy in just one year. The company's value chain, which includes retailers, distributors, truck drivers, farmers, and restaurant owners, was responsible for 157,200 of these jobs, while Coca-Cola itself directly employed around 2,989 people.
The study also found that $601 million was paid to local Nigerian suppliers, with most of the ingredients and packaging sourced locally. This means that money is being invested in Nigerian agriculture, manufacturing, and logistics rather than being exported.
As part of its efforts to reduce waste, Coca-Cola has set up a packaging collection hub in Apapa, which processes 13,000 metric tonnes of PET plastic annually. The company has also supported several recycling initiatives across the country, helping communities become cleaner and transforming lives.
