Disney Sues FCC Over License Reviews Amid Trump's Criticism
The Walt Disney Company has filed an update in its lawsuit against the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) over the agency's review of ABC station licenses. Disney claims that FCC Chair Brendan Carr is carrying out President Donald Trump's directives to curb speech critical of his administration, and that Carr is acting under threat of being fired if he doesn't comply.
The dispute began earlier this year when Kimmel made comments on ABC that the President took issue with, leading to an order for early reviews of license renewal for eight ABC stations. Disney argues that this is a violation of its First Amendment rights and has sued the FCC, which in turn requested the lawsuit be thrown out.
The company has stated that the FCC's actions are aimed at silencing criticism of the administration through the media, and has accused Chair Carr of acting under pressure from the President. A hearing is set for October 6th in a U.S. District Court in Washington to consider the lawsuit.
