Disney Taps TikTok to Boost Streaming Service with User-Generated Content
Disney's latest move to boost its streaming service Disney Plus is a partnership with TikTok. The partnership, called 'Verts', will bring user-created content to Disney Plus, featuring select Disney-themed TikToks from participating creators. This content will be available on the mobile app and will include characters and stories from across Disney's brands, including Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, FX, and more.
The deal also allows TikTok to access assets related to Disney films and series, while Disney Plus will have a feed of related TikTok videos. This move is seen as a way for Disney to engage subscribers more deeply in timely fan conversations and build stronger communities. According to Asad Ayaz, chief marketing and brand officer at The Walt Disney Company, 'The best storytellers are fans first.'
However, this partnership comes after Disney canceled one of its most well-received TV shows, Wonder Man, despite previously green-lighting a second season. The show's cancellation has raised concerns about the quality of content on Disney Plus and whether it will be able to compete with social media platforms like TikTok.
TikTok creators will be incentivized to participate in the partnership through the Disney Creator Ambassador Program, which offers 'special rewards' and increased visibility. This move is seen as a way for Disney to reward creators while promoting its own content for free.
