Dow Drops from Recent High as Bank Shares Slump
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) dropped from its highest level since September 14 as bank shares declined in value. The index fell to near 51,800 after opening with a high of around 52,100.
The DJIA is price-weighted, meaning that the biggest and most expensive stocks have a greater impact on its value. With Goldman Sachs (GS) shares costing over $900 and JPMorgan Chase (JPM) worth more than three times as much as Goldman, their movements have a significant effect on the index.
A 1% fall in Goldman's share price takes more than twice as many points off the DJIA compared to JPMorgan. The decline of bank shares has been accompanied by a shift in investor sentiment towards technology companies, with Meta Platforms (META) being one of the beneficiaries.
